Stone mason – characteristics of the profession

Stone mason is a profession which existed since people started using tools. Throughout history humanity needed stone masons to carve stones and use them in building. Without stone masons there wouldn’t be many of the famous artifacts and constructions. Mostly nameless craftsmen are responsible for the creation of famous Taj Mahal, Stonehenge or Parthenon to name just a few.
Basically the job involves shaping stones, usually into geometrical shapes to be later used in various constructions with the use of various and changeable over time tools. There is a wide differentiation within the profession depending on many factors like the place they work, kind of stone they deal with and so on. For example there are quarrymen, memorial masons, ingenuous stone masons, marble masons etc.
What is important is the fact that stone mason has always worked with the raw material, whatever it’s been and many times has used his imagination to shape according to their will. The profession of stone mason is developing today and has great perspectives ahead. With developing new technology and methods of retrieving and manufacturing the stone, the profession is an appealing one. Today stone masons are highly trained professionals with broad knowledge of possible stone applications.

The debate whether stone mason is an artist or a craftsman is not a new one. Throughout history the opinions and arguments have changed one way or another. There is no one good answer definitely stating the fact. All depends on the given person’s attitude towards their profession. An artist can be any person with an artistic soul, a child who still wonders at the world’s nature.
Today stone mason usually works in a company designing home interiors, like kitchen. Their job involves high technical skills, they need to know all the stages of processing the raw material, the methods of manufacturing and finally the design techniques. Apart from many technical skills, the job still involves a lot of creativity. It can’t be simply stated that today’s stone mason only reconstructs and follows the procedure. The work often involving the processing of natural stones is very demanding and requires imagination.
Natural stones are delicate material that need to be handled carefully. This part requires delicacy and proper attention. Their qualities like unique colors, depth and texture need stone mason’s creativity to be fully showed. Each slab is different, there is no pattern and to fully reveal natural stone’s inner beauty stone mason must have a certain sensitivity and imagination to effectively manufacture and then design the interior. Therefore, stone mason’s job can be said that involves both, first craftsmanship which is a must be in the job and then a certain level of artistry. Stone is precious material to work on and its inherent power can’t be wasted.
