Production, use and properties of quartz worktops

Quartz conglomerate worktops are not inferior in quality to products made of granite and marble. They are equally durable, durable, solid and resistant to various types of damage. It is not surprising that we are more and more willing to use them in our kitchens. For those who are considering purchasing quartz worktops, we have prepared a collection of the most important information concerning their production, use and properties. Are you curious? Then we invite you to read it!

Quartz conglomerates production process

Quartz conglomerate is produced from quartz sand, which accounts for more than 90% of the product volume and the resins and colour pigments that give them colour. Sometimes they are also enriched with pieces of glass, mirrors or shells, which allows to obtain an unusual effect. The sands used to produce conglomerates are very clean and contain almost 100% silica. They can be white, grey, transparent or beige. They are combined with polyester resin, which makes it possible to obtain an infusible and insoluble surface and organic or inorganic pigments.

During the production process, quartz sand is taken from huge silos to so-called mixers, where it is first mixed separately and then transported to the next device, where it is combined with the rest of the ingredients. The finished mixture is poured into rubber moulds, protected against contamination and transported to the press, where the temperature of 210-250 degrees Fahrenheit acts on it for 90 seconds. After this time, the finished slab is removed from the mould using suction cups. After cooling, the slab is subjected to further processing, e.g. removing excess material from the mould and levelling its edges.  The next steps are: calibration for plate thickness equalization, polishing of quartz worktops and quality control.

Rules for the use of quartz conglomerate worktops

Quartz conglomerate surfaces are quite durable, however, their resistance to scratches is slightly lower than the tops made of granite, so products should not be cut directly on them. You should also be careful when putting hot dishes on them. It is better not to do it, because the material may become discolored. Therefore, we advise you to buy special pads for dishes or pots.

However, when it comes to care, it is really not demanding. Quartz worktops have perfectly smooth surfaces to which dirt does not adhere, so just wipe them with a damp cloth and they’re ready. Alcohol-based and mild pH products can be used for cleaning. Avoid using products containing wax, solvents or ammonia.

Properties of quartz worktops

At the very end we decided to write a few words about the properties of the above mentioned products. Undoubtedly, they are characterized by excellent durability, strength and resistance to mechanical damage and scratches (as long as the products are not cut on them). Besides, they do not stain, are light, hygienic and extremely easy to care for. What is more, they are completely environmentally friendly, antibacterial and available in many colour versions, which guarantees the power of arrangement possibilities.
